Replacing a light switch

Replacing a light switch is an easy and inexpensive DIY project. The most important thing to understand is how to wire the switch. When you turn on a light switch, the current goes through the “hot” (black) wire to the light and then through the neutral (white) wire back to ground. The bare or green-wrapped ground wires act as a backup to safely dissipate the current in the event of an electrical fault.

In most cases, the two black wires are attached to the two terminal screws on the switch.

Turn off power

You can verify that the circuit has been turned off by flipping the switch and attempting to operate a light, and by using a voltage tester after removing the switch plate to make sure the wires are not charged.

Removing the switch plate and switch

Use a flathead screwdriver and a Phillips screwdriver.

Remove wires from old switch

Pay attention to the colors of the wires and where they were attached to the old switch, as you will be duplicating the position on the new switch. Using needle nose pliers will be helpful when working in this small space.

Attaching the new switch

Check the quality of the wires. Typically, there are three wires: one black, one white, and a separate ground wire. If any of the wires appear to be weaker, cut the end of the wire and re-insulate it to meet your requirements.
